Frequently Asked Questions

+ There are already ultrasound sensors on the market. What is special about the Toposens sensor?
Unlike existing ultrasound sensors, Toposens is the first one to build a sensor that delivers real 3D information from a single ultrasound sensor system. The sensor provides you with 3D position information of your surrounding instead of simple distance measurement.
+ How does it work?
Basically, the 3D ultrasound sensor imitates the brain of a bat. An ultrasound signal is sent out and our algorithms turn the reflections, that we get back from objects and people, into 3D position information.
If you are interested and want to find out more about how our sensor works, please contact us! We are happy to explain in person.
+ What are the technical specifications of the Toposens 3D ultrasound sensor?
Range: 0 – 10 m
Opening angle: min. 80°
Framerate: 10 – 60 fps
Accuracy: ca. 1 cm
Sensor size: currently 10 x 4,5 x 2 cm
Energy consumption: 0,4 Watt

The above mentioned specifications are subject to change!
Exact specifications depend on the particular use-case
+ How is the sensor different from existing 3D sensor systems?
The Toposens 3D sensor combines small size, robustness, precision and privacy protection. This mix of characteristics has not been combined into any other 3D sensor up to now and can come in handy in various situations: E.g. when you need mobility, when you need a sensor for harsh surroundings (outdoors, in a factory environment with dirt and dust) or if you are restricted by privacy regulations.
+ What do I need a 3D ultrasound sensor for?
Our ultrasound sensor can be used for applications that require 3D position information of surroundings, people and objects. It can be used as a position sensor and also as an intelligent motion sensor (it also sees still objects).
Examples include using the 3D sensor for consumer electronics (smartphone, TV), automotive, autonomous robots or people tracking.

On the applications page, you can find some possible use-cases!
+ What are the limitations of the 3D ultrasound sensor?
It‘s not an optical system like a 3D camera or 3D laser – we don‘t see details or colors, we don‘t do ‚3D scanning‘ e.g. for reconstruction purposes of objects or rooms.
Due to the use of ultrasound we are dependent on the speed of sound, which limits our framerate and our range.
+ Can the sensor identify faces? Does it record conversations?
Ultrasound ‚sees‘ point clouds, not pixels. We do not identify people or structures. We do not record hearable sounds, we focus on a very narrow range in the ultrasound spectrum. We do not send any data to servers except you ask us to do so.
+ How can I get hold of a sensor?
Please contact us and tell us about your use-case! Together we can work out whether our sensor fits your needs and build a unique solution for your specific challenge.
+ Can I test the sensor?
We are offering an Evaluation Kit for testing and prototyping! Please head over to our Evaluation Kit and leave your contact details – we will then contact you and provide you with further information!
+ How much will it cost?
Please contact us to discuss pricing questions directly with us!
+ Is it harmful for animals or humans?
No, we use standard sensors that are also built into e.g. cars for parking assistance.
